A magnetic compass is a navigational device which uses a pivoted permanent magnet to point towards Magnetic North. A much smaller plotting compass is sometimes used to plot the direction of lines of magnetic flux around a magnet.

Strange but True: The North-pointing end of a magnetic compass is a true magnetic North pole. Based on the properties of magnetic fields in which opposite poles attract, the well known Magnetic North of the Earth’s magnetic field is actually a true magnetic South pole!
